KAZIRANGA

Kaziranga is boundless. It is magical. It is not about the one horned rhino, not about the elephants, not about the hornbills. It is also not about the verditer flycatchers or the scimitar babbler. It is about eternity.

Access Take a comfortable journey in the Guwahati - Jorhat Intercity express from Guwahati. Or on the fast track, take the Guwahati - Jorhat JanaShatabdi express. Both are daily trains. From Jorhat it is just two hours journey by road. Take a bus or hire a car. Kaziranga is one of the most visited wildlife reserves of India and figures quite often on the itinerary of the discerning tourist from around the world.

It lies on the south bank of the Brahmaputra and its boundary for the most part follows the Mora Diphlu river and runs parallel to National Highway no 37. It was declared a national park in 1974.

Kaziranga covers a area of 430 sq kilometer. Its swamps and grasslands with tall thickets of elephant grass and patches of evergreen forest, support the largest number of rhino in the subcontinent. Though poaching  constitutes a major threat to the rhino population, the numbers of this species are fairly healthy. At Kaziranga, the open country makes wildlife viewing fairly easy. A day's outing is often sufficient for visitors to see most of the major species here.
